There was a great fear in the s and 70s that various respected directors who'd moved into making epics and blockbusters would be unable to return, even occasionally, to more modest productions. Some of them didn't, most notably David Lean. The same query was raised over Francis Ford Coppola and, more recently, hangs over Christopher Nolan. But the year-old Joss Whedon has triumphantly answered the question. His producers apparently insisted that between the long shooting schedule on The Avengers and its extended period of post-production he take a short break.

Or does she not blame him utterly because she blames herself equally, and so, with the same gesture, taunts him and implicitly invites him? Thus goes every one to the world but I, and I am sunburnt. I may sit in a corner and cry Heigh-ho for a husband.

Would the film be able to sustain its confident manic tone, maintain its humor and smarts, its depth of characterization and innovative use of text and landscape?
